1. Historical Evolution

The Law School of Nanchang University (formerly the Department of Law of Jiangxi University) was founded in 1980. In 1993, Jiangxi University merged with Jiangxi University of Technology to form Nanchang University, and the Department of Law of Jiangxi University was renamed the Department of Law of Nanchang University. In 1994, the university established a cluster of political and legal disciplines consisting of law, administrative management, and philosophy. In January 1995, the School of Political Science and Law was established, with three departments: the Department of Law, the Department of Administrative Management, and the Department of Philosophy, covering three first-level disciplines: law, political science, and philosophy. In 2000, the Department of Law became an independent Law School. In 2003, the Department of Law, the Department of Administrative Management, the Department of Sociology (Marxist-Leninist Studies Department, Ideological and Political Education Department), and the MPA Center were merged to form the Law School. In 2008, the Department of Law again became an independent Law School.

2. Overview of the School

The school currently has 72 faculty members, including 22 professors, 17 associate professors, 13 lecturers, 12 doctoral supervisors, and 49 master supervisors. Among the faculty, there are 5 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 6 young and middle-aged academic leaders in Jiangxi universities, 5 backbone teachers, 2 Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Masters, and 3 national "Baosteel" Outstanding Teachers. The school offers two undergraduate programs: Law and Intellectual Property. In 2025, it will add a dual bachelor's degree program in "Law + Economics" for compound talent cultivation and a special class of Law (Discipline Inspection and Supervision). Currently, there are 1,046 students, including 727 undergraduates, 303 master's students, and 16 doctoral students.

The school has a first-level discipline doctoral program in Law, a first-level discipline master's program in Law, a professional master's program in Juris Master (for non-law majors), a professional master's program in Juris Master (for law majors), and a self-established master's program in Intellectual Property Law. The Law program was approved as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site in 2019, and the Intellectual Property program was approved as a provincial first-class undergraduate program construction site in 2020. It has 1 national model branch for party building work, 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences in Jiangxi ordinary colleges and universities—the Jiangxi Local Legislation Research Center, 1 key research base for philosophy and social sciences in Jiangxi (the first of its kind in law)—the Research Center for the Construction of Rule of Law in Jiangxi, 1 base of the Education Working Committee of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee—the Education Legislation Research Sub-center of the Jiangxi Rule of Law Education Research Center, and 1 base of the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education and the Office of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee for Law-based Governance—the Jiangxi Collaborative Training and Innovation Base for Foreign-related Rule of Law Talents.

3. Major Achievements

(1) Talent Cultivation

The Law School has established the fundamental and priority status of undergraduate education, developed first-class undergraduate education, continuously improved the quality of undergraduate education, and vigorously promoted graduate education and legal professional training to meet the demand for practical and innovative talents in the construction of the rule of law. Focusing on the goals of building a law-based China and a law-based Jiangxi, the school is rooted in Jiangxi and radiates across the country, delivering high-quality and outstanding legal talents for the modernization of the rule of law through undergraduate education, graduate education, and high-end legal professional training.

(2) Scientific Research

In recent years, the Law School has made significant achievements in scientific research. Faculty members have published more than 300 academic papers in important journals such as Social Sciences in China, Chinese Journal of Law, China Legal Science, Political Science Research, and Guangming Daily, among which over 160 are in CSSCI journals, and more than 30 have been reprinted by publications such as Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Science Digest, Academic Digest of Liberal Arts in Colleges and Universities, and Renmin University Copy Materials. More than 30 high-level monographs and over 10 textbooks have been published by national authoritative and key publishing houses. The school has won more than 40 scientific research and teaching achievement awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including 16 second-class or higher awards, such as the Excellent Achievement Award of the China Law Society.

It has undertaken and completed more than 200 scientific research projects, including 18 National Social Science Fund projects, and more than 150 projects such as the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Planning Fund of the Ministry of Education, the National Law-based Governance and Legal Theory Research Projects, and projects from the China Law Society and other provincial and ministerial departments. The total research funds actually obtained and recorded in the school's financial accounts are 12.667 million yuan, with an average of 11,700 yuan per full-time teacher in vertical research funds annually. The national and provincial scientific research projects undertaken by the school over the years, as well as legislative research projects focusing on major economic, social, and rule of law construction issues in the country and Jiangxi Province, have not only produced a series of widely influential scientific research results but also won unanimous praise from all sectors of society.

(3) Party Building and Ideological and Political Work

The Party Committee of the school focuses on the ideological and political goal of "fostering virtue through education and cultivating both virtue and law," promotes the construction of a four-in-one characteristic law popularization system of "Party building + legal popularization base, law society, legal clinic, and volunteer team" with the concept of "integration and innovation" thinking, and innovates the four major rule of law cultural constructions of "Party building + law practice, camphor micro-law popularization, law salon, and debate competition." Through precise cultivation and deep practice, the effect of educating people through the rule of law is remarkable. It has been approved as the only ideological and political work demonstration site in Nanchang University, a demonstration site for the "three-standardization" construction of grassroots party building in the university, and a licensing site for the New Era Civilization Practice Center. The Rongfa Volunteer Service Party Branch, established through innovation, was rated as a national model branch for the third batch of Sample Projects for Party Building Innovation in the new era by the Ministry of Education. The Party Building Voice column of Jiangxi Education TV Station broadcast a special topic introducing the advanced characteristics of the school's party work. The Party Committee of the school was rated as a key cultivation unit for the application of the fifth batch of "National Benchmarking Departments for Party Building Work" in the university. The ideological and political work demonstration site of the Law School received on-site investigations by Governor Ye Jianchun and leaders of the Ministry of Education, who affirmed the school's ideas and positive results in exploring the "integration and innovation thinking" strategy, bravely forging a path of educating people through law, and building a large united front work pattern. At the same time, the school follows the growth characteristics of young students, highlights professional characteristics, and actively cultivates campus culture. The "12•4" National Constitution Day Art Gala initiated by the school has been held for 17 consecutive years, with strong influence inside and outside the university, forming a unique campus brand activity of the school.

(4) Social Services

Faculty members of the Law School adhere to serving local economic, social, and rule of law construction, actively participate in national and local legislative drafting, legal argumentation, and evaluation work, and always adhere to the purpose of "serving the local area and contributing to the construction of the rule of law in Jiangxi." They guide students to actively engage in legal practice and have achieved remarkable results. The Law Society of Nanchang University was rated as a "Jiangxi Provincial Model Student Association," and the "Jiangxi Provincial College Student Law Popularization Volunteer Group" is also affiliated with the school. The school attaches great importance to practical teaching and innovative education, and has signed agreements with more than 30 courts, procuratorates, law firms, legislative organs, and enterprises inside and outside the province to establish practical teaching bases. For example, since May 2017, the Law School of Nanchang University has signed a cooperation agreement with the Third Circuit Court of the Supreme People's Court.
