On June 10, 2023, at 10:00, the lecture on the theme of "The Virtuous Narrative of Rule of Law Construction" was successfully held, hosted by the Department of Social Sciences at Nanchang University, together with the Law School of Nanchang University, the Research Center for Rule of Law Construction in Jiangxi Province, the Legislative Research Center of Nanchang University, and the Education Legislation Research Branch of the Jiangxi Province Rule of Law Education Research Center, under the auspices of the Graduate Student Association of the Law School of Nanchang University.

This lecture featured Professor Du Yanlin, a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor at Jilin University, and the Director of the Research Center for Theoretical Legal Studies at Jilin University, a key humanities and social sciences research base under the Ministry of Education. Professor Du also serves as the Director of the National "2011 Plan" Jilin University Collaborative Innovation Center for Judicial Civilization and the Deputy Dean of the Law School of Jilin University. The lecture was hosted by Professor Lan Shourong of the Law School of Nanchang University, and teachers and students of the Law School were present to listen to the lecture.

Professor Du used the trolley problem as a leading question in the lecture, highlighting that the theoretical debate surrounding the trolley problem neglects the inherent capacity for moral reflection and critique in human beings. Both schools of legal thought focus solely on the objective standards of moral conduct, which has resulted in the drawbacks of the sectionalization and bureaucratization of modern law. In response to this, Professor Du suggested that we should prioritize human governance behind the rule of law, and incorporate the moral character of judges into judicial decision-making research.

Subsequently, Professor Du provided a detailed exposition on judicial ethics and judicial rulings. The virtue of equity ("thin" and "thick"), representing "proportional justice" and "legal justice," undoubtedly deserves greater attention. However, as emotional, temperamental, and intellectual virtues, they are also indispensable qualities for stable and exceptional judicial performance.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Du discussed the measures for achieving a harmonious integration of the traditional virtue-based governance and the cornerstone of the rule of law in the current context of legal construction. In terms of legislative purpose, a balanced approach is required to cultivate virtuous individuals. In terms of legislative technique, excessively stringent criteria should be avoided, but allowances should be made for the practice of virtues.

Following Professor Du's insightful sharing, Professor Lan summarized the lecture and made a concluding statemen. Students also raised questions to clarify their doubts, and Professor Du provided earnest answers.

The pursuit of learning and the act of questioning go hand in hand. Without learning, doubts cannot be resolved, and without questioning, knowledge cannot be expanded. The lecture concluded with a round of applause.
